Steamboat Springs Bike Town USA Initiative
When we look at other mountain towns and areas known for great cycling, we have come to realize that Steamboat offers some of the greatest cycling experiences to be had on this planet.
This is no idle boast; over 500 miles of single-track cross country trails, more than anywhere else in the USA, are complimented by a network of county roads that showcase a beautiful corner of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Kids bike to school, adults bike to work, and, because of it, we community members are more healthy and able to appreciate where we live. We now invite the world to come sample the goods and see why we're smiling.
The Steamboat Springs Bike Town USA Initiative was born from a desire to engage the entire community with the concept:
"Steamboat Springs represents the ultimate destination for cycling experiences."
Since 2009 a task-force group representative of business and government leaders has been meeting to lay the foundation for an economic development initiative aimed at implementing a comprehensive program of cycling developments that will enable our community to someday be recognized as "Bike Town USA" in the summer just as we are known as "Ski Town USA" in the winter.
The concept of Bike Town USA is very much a vision or goal, not a marketing gimic. We mean no disrespect to the term Ski Town USA. It conveys the scope and depth of our vision and efforts to make Steamboat a more Bicycle Friendly destination. Some ski areas in North America already see more bike traffic in summer than ski traffic in winter, such is the potential of this initaitive!
RCR hosted The Steamboat Bike Summit from October 21st - 23rd, 2010 beginning the process of developing a master plan and its potential benefits to our community.
