Here is the Routt County Rider Meeting Minutes 03/09/04

I. Routt National Forest - Recreation Plan
A. Rabbit Ears
B. North Routt
There was some discussion on whether members of RCR could and would be willing to go to the public comment on the Winter and summer use meeting of these two area. There was some speculation as to whether these area would come under further regulations of use and or fees. Some members felt that the Public Discussion time frame with the DOW had passed. Discussion was tabled and members are encouraged to attend any future meetings.

II. Ski Area Master Plan - Robin attended one of the ski area 5 - 10 year master plan meetings and found that only one new beginner trail had been proposed. Although any new trail should be considered to be good news, the Ski Corp could not offer a reason other than a "lack of money" as to why no other trails would be provided for in the future. As very few of the items on the master plan are presented with a budget in place for funding (probably due to a "lack of money"), this position highlights the lack of interest from the ski area in supporting any new intermediate or advanced bike trails.

III. Routt County Budget - The time frame for effecting the 2004 budget has passed. Some effect for changed could occur for the 2005 budget could occur at the present time with some research. The question of what roads the RCR would like to see improved was presented without response. The week after the 2005 budget hearing is the right time to begin to talk with the city and the county.

IV. New Officers & Elections -
Current officers were asked to write a description of their jobs and a description of their duties before the nominations. The information would be placed on the Routt County Riders Website for RCR members to access: www.routtcountyriders.com. Current Officers are: Scott Schlapkohl = Secretary/Treasurer; Dave Williams = Vice President; Pete Wither = President

IV. Increasing Membership - There was discussion as to the fact that there is great potential to increase the number of RCR club members. Some ideas on how to increase the member were: Membership Drive; PR; Special Events; Sponsorship;
Goal - to increase membership to 100-200; larger membership means larger volunteer base.
Fee - $15 (no increase)

It was agreed that we should outline more clearly the benefits of membership:
- To have a voice in the future of issues affecting road and mountain biking in the area.
- Club Jersey to create a more visible identity of membership. The club is investigating the feasibility of preparing a large run of shirts that would be sold to club members and could be retailed by local bike shops with a Membership included. Members wanted to see a distinctive and desirable design created. Larry agreed to work further on designs that were started last year. Shirts would offer a sponsorship opportunity to local businesses. Primary spots are proposed at $250 with a secondary level of $100. This could significantly reduce the price of the shirt.
- Events: that the club would endorse and assist in volunteerism at local events that benefit the cycling community.

It was proposed that a committee chair position be created for managing membership.

V. 24 Hour Race
- Officially called the "24 hours of Steamboat" until a major sponsor takes over naming..
Scheduled for June 12 - 13, 2004
Should draw at least 100 riders because it is the only race in the area. Information may be accessed at www.rockypeakproductions.com
24 hour race needs help from RCR
1. Organizing
2. Volunteers - before, during and after
It was mentioned that RCR could have a booth or a tent at the event - good time to get members and/or donations. Other benefits to RCR membership are yet to be discussed.

VI. Velo Swap - proposed for April 10th
Ideas - $ 10 or $20 for 10 x 10 space
- Place: Community Center or Olympia Hall
- perhaps a percent of profits to go to RCR
- Market like the ski swap (Either an ad at $800 or Public Service Announcement)
** Ask Bike Shops if they want to buy a booth and get rid of their stuff.

VIII. Adopt-a-Trail - Businesses and groups will be asked to adopt a trail; trail maps and sign on trail stating the sponsors of the trail. Then that group would maintain the trail. More information needed from Gretchen Sehler

Emerald Mountain Bike Trail Signs - While the City and Ortons have okayed the idea of putting up signs on the Emerald Mountain Bike Trails; Gretchen needs to be consulted. The map can be made of only the City parcel; not the Orton Parcel. To Do List: 1. Get signs made 2. Put Signs up

VIIII. Credit Card Payment of Dues - An idea of setting up RCR to take credit cards was suggested. More info needed.

X. Administrative Access of RCR Website - Is there a web guru out there that can help with maintaining and revamping the RCR website. If a wider access could be obtained then several members could help maintain the copy and post information for the group.

Road Improvements / Chip and Seal Issues : Stuart Handloff
The Board of Routt County Commissioners is having their annual budget meeting at 6pm on November 25th in the Commissioners meeting room, Annex Building. This meeting is where all of the final decisions regarding the County road improvements are made. If the Routt County Riders want input on paving and chip and seal work for next year (or even to affect long range policy), this is the best meeting to attend. And best of all, there are rarely any members of the public who attend.

I have visited this meeting in years past on my own and had the undivided attention of the Board. However, as a spokesperson of one, my views on chip and seal have usually been ignored. If we want to change public policy, this budget meeting is the place and the more riders who attend the better our chances. Please pass along this letter to the other members of the club. Thanks!
Trail Projects: Gretchen Sehler
We had a lot of help and I would like to thank people for their work in the next minutes you put out. Thanks to Honey Stinger for bars. The people that helped were Jason Kruger, Katie Lindquist, Brian Paul, Marc Sehler, and Dave Carely. There were several others that volunteered but their services were not needed. Thanks to everyone involved.

FROM IMBA
"Your generous, time-tested support has helped build the International
Mountain Bicycling Association. Thanks to you, the sport of mountain biking
is gaining ground."

IMBA now has the staff, the expertise and the experience to really make a
difference. But what we don't have yet is enough money to build new trails
where they are most needed.

IMBA is going on the offensive. Our group's number one priority in 2004 is
building new trails. Our immediate goal: raise $50,000 before the end of the
year to kick-start our work in 2004.

Recently, they have sent out letters asking for your donation to IMBA's Annual Fund. Contributors of $30 or more will receive their all-new, full-color 2004 calendar!

Three easy ways to donate:
1) Online at http://stores.yahoo.com/imba/imyearcam1.html
2) Call toll free at 1-888-442-4622
3) Mail a check to IMBA, P.O. Box 7578, Boulder, CO 80306

Your year-end gift of $30, $50, $100 - or more, if possible - will help
us...
- Send more IMBA staffers into the field to provide technical trail
expertise and strategic advice to our clubs and land managers.
- Bring our state and regional leaders together more often to share ideas
and strategies to speed new trail development.
- Teach local mountain bikers how to overcome the three primary obstacles to
new trails: political opposition, lack of funding, and government red tape.
- Award more cash grants and donate more trailwork tools and educational
materials to help get new projects off the ground.
- Develop and share the innovative techniques needed to create first-rate
freeriding opportunities on public land.

Every dollar we collect in this campaign will be used to build new trails
where they are most needed.

While the backbone of our work continues to be leading the fight to preserve
trail access, we're on the move. Your financial support and active
involvement have helped IMBA accomplish a lot in 2003.

But the truth is that too many mountain bikers still can't find appealing
trails nearby. IMBA's work, and the work of our 450 affiliated clubs, is
more important than ever.

That's why IMBA needs your end-of-the-year support. Your gift of $30 – or
more – will help us make 2004 "The Year of New Trails."
October Routt County Riders Monthly Meeting- 10/14/03

Lower Bear Trail.
RCR received grant funds for the completion of the Lower Bear Trail in Strawberry Park. The Routt Nat?l Forest Service will do the work- signage. Rocky Mountain Youth Corps. wants to adopt this and do the trail maintenance. Robin Craigen mentioned possibly recognizing groups that adopt trails on RCR jersies which was generally approved.

Gore Gruel.
Scott Schlapkohl discussed the Gore Gruel road ride which took place on Sunday, September 28th. It was a gorgeous, sunny day. Fourteen riders participated and Chris Oppold from Sore Saddle Cyclery and Lee Cox provided great support. Gels and bars were provided by Sore Saddle and beverages by RCR. We pre-ordered sandwiches from Back Country Provisions. 115 miles of spectacular colors- especially on Gore Pass. Let?s get more riders next year. What a great ride!! Thanks everyone for participating. And thanks to Chris for Sore Saddle?s support and for your?s and Lee?s help!!!

Insurance.
Our insurance has been renewed for 2004. Scott will also sign up for Special Event insurance for the Gore Gruel next year and possibly the Steamboat Bike Festival road criterium. Scott will also talk to Team Evergreen about ideas on how to grow our membership rolls, how to create more excitement for RCR, and about letting them know about upcoming RCR events- Steamboat Bike Festival, Town Challenge, and Gore Gruel.

Junior Team Update.
Our RCR Junior Cycling team was announced at the final Town Challenge race party, and they recently received their jersies. Four of the team are going this weekend to watch the 24 Hours of Moab bike race. Good going kids!! Larry Johnson mentioned he had received info on the middle school/high school state bicycling championships. He will check into this for the junior team.

RCR Awards.
Larry also brought the ?Recogniton Plaque? to the meeting. The winners were announced also at the final Town Challenge race party- Rider: Jim Meyers; Industry: Gretchen Sehler; Volunteer: Marc Sehler. Congratulations to these three and all the others that were also nominated!!

Emerald Mountain Land Swap.
At the special Routt County Commissioners public meeting held in September to discuss the Emerald Mtn. Partnership RCR spoke out in support of the Partnership?s proposed land exchange between the Colorado State School Land Board, the BLM, and private land owners. Hopefully this exciting process will continue to move forward with the end product being that the 6300 acre parcel will be protected and available to the general public for multi-use. Pete Wither, president of RCR, rode on 160 acres of state parks land recently.

Trail projects / Adopt-a-Trail.
Gretchen – thru the city- has a trail project in progress. She needs volunteers. Please call her at home at 879-8166. She needs help at least thru this week. The first thing on the priority list is re-routing some current trails- starting with the Tree Haus traverse. Next summer the plan is to re-route additional trails to remove straight-up-and-down-the hill trails. The City has put in for a grant to have the RMYC help for 2 weeks of trail maintenance on Howelson Hill next summer. RCR will submit a letter to support this project. Gretchen also presented the idea to the City to use an adopt-a-trail program for organizations or companies to maintain trails.

Northwest Colorado Transportation /
George Krawzoff, City Transit Director, informed RCR of two upcoming important meetings:
-Northwest Colorado Transportation on Thursday 10/16 @ 10:30 @ Centennial Hall. Topic of discussion= ?Corridor Visioning?. Discussing more comprehensive plans for transportation corridors in NW Colorado.
-Nov.12 @ 1:00 @ Centennial Hall with Bill Haight, local State Highway Commissioner, and Tom Norton, head of CDOT.

Chip and Seal Problems.
George talked to Paul Draper as a citizen about the large chip-and-seal being used throughout Colorado. What a pain is basicly what George said. Paul said that it?s an economic decision for the Routt County Commissioners. The large type of chip costs $22,000 per mile and lasts 5-7 years; the small chip costs $19,000 per mile and lasts only 2-3 years. We don?t have anyone on the board that is a cycling advocate. But it doesn?t mean we can?t still go to public meetings and voice our opinions and also call and/or write letters to the Commissioners.

Membership Drive.
RCR would like to do a mailing to get more RCR members. Some ideas tossed about:
-Mailing to Town Challenge participants
- ? ? Nordic Challenge ?
-Contact Bike and Ski shops re: posting fliers in their stores and doing bag stuffers about RCR. Joel Schullman volunteered to help Scott and Robin put something together.

Bike Festival Criterium.
Robin mentioned the Bike Festival road criterion. To pull it off for next year we need to get the Special Use/Event permit ASAP= early. Or do we ?give up? for now on this event and push to get the Gore Gruel off the ground with greater participation next year instead? Mixed opinions. Currently RCR has 22 paid members and 54 riders on our mailing list.

RCR Trail Map & Local Guide / RCR Brochure.
Gretchen asked about trying to revive the RCR trail map or something similar to it with local mountain bike rides and road rides, with the possibility of having ad space for sponsors as well as possibly listing locals favorites- bike shop, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, etc.

Email.
Discussed getting members? e-mail addresses available to other members so we could exchange ideas .

Corrections.
One correction to previous meeting minutes- Western Surgical Group is the correct name for one of the sponsors of the Junior Cycling Team. Sorry, Ed.

If you have questions or ideas, feel free to check our web site: RouttCountyRiders.org

Next Meeting / Elections.
This was our final meeting for 2003. The first meeting for 2004 will be in early April-date to be determined. If you wish to be more involved next year please submit your name for club elections at the first meeting. Enjoy a super winter! See you all next spring.

ROUTT COUNTY RIDERS Minutes for Meeting 9/2/03

RCR Junior Cycling Team. Larry Johnson brought us up-to-date. The junior team will be announced at the final Town Challenge race party this Friday, Sept. 5th. Each team member will receive a team jersey. Thanks to our sponsors: Steamboat Surgical Group, Sore Saddle Cyclery, Orange Peel, Wheels, Ski Haus, and Steamboat Ski and Bike Care. Special thanks to Ed Kimm and Ron Famiglietti at Steamboat Surgical Group for their $300.00 support!!!! The junior team will attend the 24 Hours of Moab race in October. Thank you, Larry, for organizing this junior team.

RCR Annual Awards. At the race party on Friday (9/5) awards will be given to recognize individuals who contribute significantly to the local cycling community. Nominations were made at this meeting. Everyone at the race party will have the opportunity to vote. There are three categories: Rider, Volunteer, and Industry/Trade.

Membership Drive. Routt County Riders would like to increase the number of paid membership. At the race party we?ll talk about this. On that subject we all agreed to create a family membership rate policy. Individual memberships are still $15. For each additional family member it will be only $5 each.

RCR Club Jerseys. We discussed club jerseys. Should we buy ourselves? Or through bike shops? Should we inventory them as a club? Or have the bike shops do so? Would bike shops be interested in having their names on the jerseys in addition to RCR for a ad/sponsorship fee? Also, we would have them available at the local bike shops to sell to both members and to the general public- to increase our visibility. Members would either get a better price or purchase price would include part or all of annual membership dues.. Robin Craigen is going to look into the jerseys and a sponsorship package for logos through the fall/winter as part of an overall plan for the club's 2004 activities. The jersey will be available in the Spring. For a preview of the design click here.

New Club Officers. At the first meeting next year we will nominate and elect new officers. Pete Wither announced that he will be stepping down as President after 10 years at the helm. Please consider getting involved!

Emerald Mountain Partnership. Les Liman (RCR member) representing the Emerald Mountain Partnership and the ongoing land exchange discussed what the status of the process is. If you are not educated on this issue, please do look into it. Did you know that the 6,300 acres involved is for the most part above and on the other side of the road up to the VOR? This is not property we currently have access to use-for riding, hiking, skiing, etc.The recent ?anti? campaign is about only about 20 parcels out of over 100. Les and the Partnership are seeking all of our help in writing letters of support to the newspaper, Routt County Commissioners, BLM, and state representatives and senators. RCR is going to write such a letter. We are also going to place an ad in the newspaper showing our support. Please write letters and make phone calls!!!

Biking in Hayden. Lindsey Herr from the Hayden Recreation Dept. says there is a road/trail in the Cog vicinity and was wondering if RCR would want to do a fall ride to get people interested in the area. Good possibility for early season riding. Length is 14-19 miles. Approximately 800 ft. of elevation gain and loss, according to Mike Markle.

Gore Pass Road Race. This Saturday there is a road race happening locally - The Gore Pass Road Race. 12 to 43 miles depending on your class. For info call 303-443-1318 or 303-415-9259. Or e-mail Classics@CyclingEvents.com or jaypawlak@hotmail.com. Cost is$35.

Gore Gruel. Also, the annual Sore Saddle Gore Gruel road ride is scheduled for Sunday, Sept.28th. For details go to Sore Saddle where there is a sign-up sheet. Cost will cover a sandwich and beverage from Back Country Provisions and money to be donated to a charitable cause. It was a blast last year. We had beautiful weather. Come out and have some fun. I talked to the project engineer on the Muddy Pass project on Rabbit Ears Pass. He said that they plan to commence paving the week of Sept.22nd with a completion date in the first week of October.

New Website Host Sponsor
Local ISP, Springsips, has generously donated website hosting for RouttCountyRiders.org in return for logo placement on the RCR Jersey. Robin Craigen has taken over website coordination from Dave Williams.
Road Projects
I spoke to Paul Draper from Routt County Road & Bridge and he gave me a list of the 2003 projects. The majority of this year's budget is going towards the dreaded chip & seal (C&S) but there will be some new sections of double C&S that replaces gravel with a pavement-like surface. All the road work is scheduled for July and August and we will be faced with 38 miles of new C&S by the end of the summer.

RoCo Rd #14, #35
C&S from Treehaus south all the way to the Hilton Gulch school, 9.5 miles. This will be single C&S on the existing pavement and double C&S on the existing gravel sections. This project will create continuous pavement on River Road from town to Hilton Gulch with loop options to Hwy 131 at Haymaker and the Sidney school.
RoCo Rd #18
C&S from RoCo Rd #18C to RoCo Rd #14B, 0.5 miles. This will be double C&S which will extend the pavement going past Catamount Lake to the intersection at the top of the hill in Pleasant Valley.
RoCo Rd #27
C&S from Oak Creek north to Middle Creek (RoCo Rd #31), 8 miles
RoCo Rd #27
C&S from US 40 south to RoCo Rd #51B, 2 miles
RoCo Rd #33
C&S from the intersection with RoCo Rd #33A south over the hill to the end of the existing pavement, 5 miles
RoCo Rd #53
C&S from the Hayden Raceway south to Seneca Pit II, 3.8 miles
RoCo Rd #62
C&S from RoCo Rd #129 to the Steamboat Lake marina, 1.5 miles
RoCo Rd #129
C&S from the intersection with RoCo Rd #62 north to Columbine, 3.5 miles
RoCo Rd #129
The Mad Creek bridge will be repaired during August and September. Traffic will be down to one lane, controlled by automatic signals, for the 6 week construction period.

Although there isn't any new pavement this summer, except for the sections of double C&S, Paul holds out hope that next year we will see some new overlay on RoCo Rd #129. The schedule is for one section from Big Creek (Sandelin's) to Deep Creek (RoCo Rd #54) and a second section from Moon Hill Ranch (the old Elk River Grazing Assn) all the way to Seedhouse Rd (RoCo Rd #64). The road & bridge budget is getting tight with the state cutting what they send to the counties and the $1.2 million the commissioners transferred to help pay for the new justice center.

Safety RantWe had a lively discussion about keeping cyclists safe on the roads. It boils down to bike riders taking responsibility for their actions and doing whatever is necessary to stay safe. We can put out public service announcements informing drivers about bicyclist rights and how to pass safely but if cyclists don't act responsibly on the road, all the driver education in the world won't keep us safe.

Last month I rode in the Santa Fe Century with over 1,000 other riders. As we were leaving town we had to cross I-25 along with the associated on and off ramps. Two riders about 100 yrds ahead of me rode right across the entrance to the on ramp with no regard to the traffic causing two vehicles to slam on their brakes and lean on the horn. As I passed the two riders I told them in no uncertain terms that their move was really stupid. Number one, they could have been injured or even killed and number two, those two drivers probably now have a real negative view of all bike riders.

Last weekend we had a couple riders I hadn't previously ridden with join our group ride. One of them was an experienced, strong rider with the bad habit of pulling into the lane of traffic without regard for approaching vehicles. The first occurrence was when he dropped off the front of our pace line when a vehicle was right behind us and beginning to pass. The rider almost forced one of us off the shoulder as he had to pull right to avoid the passing vehicle. Someone commented that the road needed some wider shoulders. I responded that what was needed was riders that didn't pull into traffic without looking. The second occurrence was when the pace line slowed as it started up a small hill. This time the rider decided we weren't going fast enough and jumped off the rear without looking for a clear spot in traffic. Again, there was a vehicle beginning his pass and the driver was forced to brake and lean on his horn. At that point I decided I didn't want to be associated with such a rider and told the group to continue without me.

Bike riders constantly complain about inconsiderate drivers yet we continue to ignore our own actions. If we expect drivers to accept bikers on the road then we have to ride responsibly. Learn to ride defensively. Pretend you're invisible to anyone in a vehicle. Give a friendly wave any time a vehicle makes a safe pass or waits for you at an intersection. Ride with a mirror so you're aware of traffic approaching from the rear. You wouldn't think of driving your car without mirrors so why don't you ride with one? Responsible riders will earn the respect of drivers. My belief is that you can win an argument with a car many times but you may only lose the argument once.

Road CritSore Saddle Cyclery has applied to the City of Steamboat for a special use permit to hold a road critirium race on Sunday, June 29. This permit will allow for the closure of all the streets between and including Yampa and Lincoln between 7th and 12th between the hours of 6am to 11am. This will be the same course we had for last year's race. The idea is to allow practice riding on the course from 6am until the first race at 8:30am. We'll have more information once the permit has been issued and the details have been finalized.

Trail MaintWe had a good turnout for the annual maintenance on the Hot Springs Trail. In addition, the Youth Corps has been doing trail work in the area. I understand all the downfall trees have been cleared from the Mad Creek Trail. The USFS will not have a dedicated trail crew this summer so they will be looking for volunteers to work with them on trail maint. Look for announcements in the local paper for trail work to clear the Divide Trail and the Mountain View Trails.

SprockidsAs part of the Steamboat Town Challenge race series, Gretchen and Marc Sehler along with Katie Lindquist have implemented the IMBA Sprockids program. Every Monday of race week, they will hold a bike clinic for all kids 17 and under. The clinics are held at the location of that week's race, starting at 5:30pm. The clinics cover a preview of the course, race tactics, riding techniques, and even bike maintenance tips. This is a great program and it's a great way to get kids introduced and involved in bike racing.

Emerald Mtn UsePete met with the BLM representative and discussed our concerns over the lack of recreation use in the Emerald Mtn Partnership land use proposal (see discussion from May meeting). We had planned on developing our own proposal to be presented to the BLM but the input from the BLM was that they would prefer that we present our proposal to the Emerald Mtn Partnership. Pete, Gretchen, and Marc will meet again with the BLM to review existing trails.

Junior Race TeamLarry Johnston presented a proposal to the club to sponsor a junior mtn bike race team. The four team members will be selected from the Town Challenge participants and they will be given the chance to travel to Winter Park for the Tipperary Creek race and also to Moab for the 24 Hours of Moab race. There was a discussion over financial commitment and insurance concerns but Larry felt there would be none of either for the club. The team members will be required to do 20 hrs of trail work as part of their commitment. We agreed to allow him to use our name as part of the project.

Emerald Mtn Trail NamesThe club will be installing posts with trail names on all the major trails on the Orton property. These will be small signs with the trail name, a note that the trail is on private property, and credit to Routt County Riders for the signs. As requested by the land owners, maps of the trails will be given to all emergency agencies but will not be posted in public areas. The thinking is we would like to keep this area for use of local riders as they hopefully will have more respect for the private property. Along with the signs, we will be working with the land owners to rebuild and/or reroute trails to make them more sustainable. This will eliminate those sections that either go through boggy areas or go directly down the fall line. Stay tuned for announcements of work days for this project.

Bear Trail SignsWe have just received the final payment from GOCO of the grant money for the Lower Bear Creek Trail. This money will be used for purchase and placement of signs at each end. The signs will have the trail name and an explanation that it was created by Routt County Riders working in partnership with the USFS.

Mtn States RaceThe Mtn States Cup race series will be coming to Steamboat this August 2-3. The official race name is the Storm Mountain Thunder. This mountain bike race was brought to town by the Chamber Resort Association who has turned it over to a private race promoter. The original intent was for the race to coordinate with a local bike festival but it appears the promoter has no interest in working with the community or the bike club.

Club SwagThe manufacturers of Clif Bars sent the club a Season Kickoff Care Package to thank us for our support of mountain biking. The package contained a box of Clif Bars in one of their new flavors and two boxes of Clif Bar Shots. Everyone at the meeting got at least one of each. It paid to attend!

May 2003

Stmbt NORBA RaceThe dates have been set for the 2003 Steamboat NORBA race. The race will be held August 1-3 as part of the Steamboat Bike Festival. We will post more as information becomes available but you can contact the Chamber Resort Association (879-0880) if you have specific questions.

Emerald Mtn UseTom Litteral gave a report on the current status of the land swap between the State Land Board property and the BLM. It appears the process is moving forward but there is some concern over the proposed land use once the BLM takes possession. The State Land Board has designated the Emerald Mtn Partnership group as the lead group responsible for facilitating the land swap with the BLM. The Emerald Mtn Partnership is also preparing a land use proposal to be presented to the BLM once they take possession. The Partnership is made up of primarily current users of the property (agriculture users with lease agreements to protect) and their preliminary land use proposal reflects their personal interests. Our concern is that recreation use of the land is at the bottom of the list with absolutely minimal access to the existing trails. The RCR membership unanimously voted to begin the process of developing a separate land use proposal to be presented to the BLM. This proposal will be developed with the input and involvement of other recreational user groups (runners, skiers, hikers, etc).

Hot Springs Trail MaintThe annual maintenance on the Hot Springs Trail will be Saturday, May 24. Meet at the Strawberry Park Hot Springs parking lot at 11:00 and bring your hoes, shovels, garden clippers, loppers, axes, and saws. We will be doing minor work on the trail surface but trees have fallen across the trail and bushes need to be trimmed back.

TAC MeetingGeorge Krawzoff gave a presentation and explanation of the process CDOT uses to update their regional transportation plan. This process decides what roads will receive what work in what time frame. Call George (879-3717) if you are interested in participating or attending the next Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) meeting on May 22. The meeting will be held at Centennial Hall from 2:30 to 3:30.

Club RidesKatie Lindquist is heading up a project to organize and promote club activities. She teaches classes on mtn bike skills during the summer for Ski Corp and has had quite a few inquiries on organized rides. We envision this as regularly scheduled mtn bike rides, road rides, and possibly other activities. Obtaining club insurance will be the first portion of this project. Stay tuned for more details.

Going along with Katie's project, Dexter Mahaffey wants to organize a weekly time trial series this summer as a RCR activity. Club insurance will be required before he can proceed but everything looks like the series will be starting in the near future. A few of us met by B&K last summer for a few nights of informal TT training and it was a lot of fun. This should be a popular series for the club.

Sept 2002

Stmbt NORBA Race? The Chamber Resort Assn. held a meeting on Sept 9 to discuss the possibility of bringing a NORBA race to Steamboat in 2003. This would probably be part of the scheduled Mtn. States Cup Series. There were quite a few bike enthusiasts in attendance and there appeared to be a good amount of interest in holding such an event. Between trying to fit into the Series schedule and trying to avoid a conflict with other Chamber events, there are a limited number of weekends available for consideration. The Chamber will host a visit from both a NORBA representative and a Cycle Syndicate representative this next weekend so they can see what Steamboat has to offer. There will be another meeting at the Chamber offices on Monday, Sept 16, 5:30 pm to further discuss the project.

Gore Gruel RideSore Saddle Cyclery will host an informal Gore Gruel ride on Sunday, September 22. Gore Gruel - 112 mile road century: $30 pp includes sag (Clif bars, Gu, Cytomax, support vehicle) and lunch from Back Country Provisions. All proceeds beyond cost of sag and lunch will go to the Lance Armstrong Foundation. At least two testicular cancer survivors from local bike shops will be riding. Meet at Sore Saddle for 8:30 a.m. departure.

This is a charity ride, and riders can pay more than $30 if they would like to contribute more to the LAF. The ride is not sponsored by nor endorsed by the LAF. Checks should be made out to Sore Saddle Cyclery; Sore Saddle will forward monies remaining after expenses to the LAF.

Lunch selection must be made by Saturday night, Sept 21.

Velo SwapThe annual Velo Swap will be held in Denver on October 26 at the National Western Complex. Admission at the door is $8 but you can purchase tickets early online or at sponsoring vendors for $6. Find more information on renting a table to sell your extra gear or on admission tickets at www.veloswap.com. This year Graham Watson will be there signing his latest book as well as displaying some of his exclusive pictures spanning two decades of the Tour de France.

Emerald Mtn Trail SignsThe club will be looking at purchasing some trail signs for Emerald Mtn. This sounds like a good use of the club's treasury and it will be an advantage for everyone if the trail names were standardized. We will pursue this with both the City of Stmbt and the private land owners.

Paving ProjectsBoth the County and the State have been madly working on paving projects while the weather was still warm. RoCo Rd 33 (20 Mile Road) has a fresh coat of pavement from James Brown Bridge to Road 33A. The smooth surface is like riding on glass! The dangerous intersection of RoCo Rd 14 (River Rd) and 14A has been completely rebuilt and now the pavement extends to Colo 131. This creates a 15 mile paved loop out River Road and back on US 40. Almost the entire Mt. Harris canyon, except for the section between the bike warning signs, has been freshly paved. When CDOT did it they also filled in the rumbles! It's not a complete paving job but the City of Steamboat filled in the cracks on River Rd from the 5th Street Bridge to Brooklyn.

July 2002

Ski Corp Dirt CampThe Steamboat Ski Corp is putting on a Woman's Only Mountain Bike Camp featuring expert biker Katie Lindquist. This will be a three day camp designed for women ages 16 and up at the beginner to intermediate riding level. Basic bike maintenance will be integrated with riding techniques. The dates are Tues, June 9; Thurs, June 11; and Sat, June 13. The cost is $95 which includes lunch on Saturday. Please call Nicole at 871-5382 to register or if you have additional questions.

XC Trip ReportTom Litteral gave a report of his just completed, seven week bike trip from LA to Boston. He shared a few of his experiences including his observation that pedalling 3,600 miles allows you to eat as much pie and ice cream you want. Of course riding in 108 degree temps and 95% humidity requires lots of liquids and lots of calories. If you see Tom ask him about his buns of steel but don't ask him to a buffet dinner. He's seen enough buffets to last a lifetime.

RTR ReportThis year's Ride The Rockies included a sizeable number of Steamboat riders. Every year seems to have something to describe the tour. Three years ago it was the hail on top of Lizard Head Pass. Two years ago it was the head winds from Walsenburg to Alamosa. This year it was the smoke from the wildfires. We had our route changed two different days because of the fires and the smoke was almost always with us. The weather was hot and the winds we experienced made the fires even worse. The tour was a loop route starting and ending in Alamosa. Basically the loop had the four corners of Alamosa, Durango, Montrose, and Salida. It was seven days of riding totalling just under 500 miles. That part of our state has some very impressive scenery and it's just too bad that we weren't always able to see it through the haze.

RoCo Road ProjectsI had a lengthy conversation with Paul Draper of the Routt County Road and Bridge Department concerning this summer's construction projects. The county has a number of projects planned that will impact the surrounding roads. Below is a quick summary of what is planned. All projects are scheduled for August unless otherwise noted.

RoCo Road 14 (River Road)
As reported last month the road is closed from the Country Green turnoff to the Humble Ranch including the section over to Colo 131. The county is totally rebuilding the dangerous intersection by carving down the hill and eliminating the blind intersection going to 131. Paul told me the project is ahead of schedule and should be completed by Aug 1. The reconstruction will extend the pavement down RoCo 14 to the Humble Ranch as well as across the river and RR to 131. This will create a loop ride going down River Road, across to Hwy 40 at Haymaker, then back to town.
RoCo Road 33 (20 Mile)
The section from the James Brown bridge to RoCo 33A is scheduled for a total overlay (not chip & seal). The bids came in higher than expected so Paul didn't know if this would be done this summer or not.
RoCo Road 129 (Elk River)
The section from the Stmbt airport to Hot Springs Creek is scheduled for a rebuild and overlay. The roadway will be widened to 28' so we will now have from 2'-3' shoulders on both sides. The 2.3 mile section from RoCo 54 (Deep Creek) to RoCo 56 (Moon Hill bridge) will get a new chip & seal. This may or may not include the existing shoulders depending on their condition.
RoCo Roads 15 & 17 (back loop from P'Berg to Yampa)
This entire section will get new C&S.
RoCo Road 16
The road from the Stagecoach Lake inlet bridge to the Stagecoach development will get new C&S. This shouldn't impact many road riders as the road continuing up Morrison Creek is still gravel.
RoCo Road 27 (Oak Creek to Power Plant)
The county has been overlaying sections every year but there remained a bad section of about 5 miles from the Hayden plant going south. Paul said they weren't going to rebuild that section yet but they did do a massive patch job on the worse sections.
RoCo Road 64 (Seedhouse)
The road currently has a 1 mile section of pavement off RoCo 129. Paul plans on extending the pavement another 5 miles which I think should take it almost to Hinman Park. Actually, this is not true pavement but rather a double coating of C&S over a fabric underlayment. It sounds like trouble but it is the same pavement we have on River Road and that's just fine to ride on.
RoCo Road 36 (Strawberry Park)
The pavement (double C&S) will be extended all the way to the turnoff to Elk Park at the base of the steep climb. This won't create any kind of loop ride but will extend a great out-and-back ride.

I asked Paul about the County's policy on C&S. He said they laid test sections on RoCo 129 to test different size gravels and the smaller pea gravel just didn't hold up the minimum 5 years. This means they will continue to use the larger 3/4" gravel. The good news is that after complaints about the sharp edges from bikers and well as motorized vehicle owners, the county has started applying a final "fog coat" after the C&S has set. This not only smooths out the gravel but it turns the surface black to increase solar gain giving better snow and ice clearing in the winter. Paul also said they would continue to C&S only the driving surface unless the shoulders have started to deteriorate in which case the entire road surface will be covered.

Sewer GratesIn case you haven't noticed, there are numerous sewer grates in Steamboat that have the slots aligned parallel with the street. This is a real safety hazard to narrow road tires. We will be documenting the location of these hazardous grates and will ask the city to turn them so the slots are perpendicular to the traffic. Please email me if you see a grate you would like noted.

June 2002

Dues Are DueIf you haven't already paid, the RCR dues are due for the year 2002. They are still $15 per year and can be mailed to POB 770094, Steamboat Springs, CO.

Local Road RidesIf you're looking for someone to ride with on the road you might consider joining one of the local group rides. These are informal, show-and-go rides and are in NO WAY sponsored by RCR.

Lunch Ride
Meet in front of Mike Holloran's office, 9th & Oak, at noon. The group meets most days of the week and rides different routes for an hour or so. These are fairly easy going rides and everyone is welcome.
Evening Ride
Meet in back of Orange Peel Cyclery at 5:30 every Tuesday evening if you're interested in riding with the Moots crew. This can be an intense group of hammer heads so be forewarned.
Time Trial Training
Meet at the parking lot across from Buddy Werner Library every Thursday at 5:30 for informal time trial training. The first rider will go off at 6:00. Riders will leave at 1 minute intervals. The course is a measured 20km out-and-back on 20 mile road with the turn around between the Cow Creek turnoff and the cattle guard. All riders 18 and older are welcome.

Pearl Lake TrailWe have a report that the new trail that connects Pearl Lake to the Coulton Creek Trail is in great shape. This trail was built last summer as a cooperative effort between the Colo State Parks, USFS, and the Rocky Mtn Youth Corps. The trail starts on the south side of the Pearl Lake boat ramp, crosses the dam, then heads into the forest. It is about 5 miles from Pearl Lake to the Coulton Creek Trail with a couple short but steep climbs.

Hot Springs Trail MaintThe annual maintenance on the Hot Springs Trail will be Saturday, June 8. Meet at the Strawberry Park Hot Springs parking lot at 9:00 and bring your garden clippers and loppers. We won't be doing any work on the trail surface but the trees and bushes need to be trimmed back. Road ClosureAll riders need to be aware that the county will be closing a portion of River Road (County Road 14) to rebuild the dangerous intersection between the Steamboat Pines/Country Green turnoff and the Hwy 131 turnoff. This is the blind hill that has been the site of many accidents including last summer's fatality. The county has posted signs by TreeHaus and on Hwy 131 explaining that the road will be closed starting June 17 and continuing into August. Plan your rides accordingly as not even bikes will be able to pass during the construction.

Dues Are DueIf you haven't already paid, the RCR dues are due for the year 2002. They are still $15 per year and can be mailed to POB 770094, Steamboat Springs, CO.

Hot Springs Trail MaintWith such a dry Spring, quite a few RCR members have already ridden Hot Springs Trail and the general agreement is that little or no actual trail work needs to be done this year. There was one tree across the trail but that has been moved to the side. We will need to trim some vegetation back so we have scheduled the annual work day for Saturday, June 8. We will finalize the start time at our next meeting on June 3.

Organized Club RidesAt last night's meeting we had quite a bit of interest in starting up some organized rides. We had these for mtn bike riders a number of years ago but the program died from lack of participation. It was pointed out that there already are some existing options out there.

For road riders there is a group that rides almost every lunch hour leaving at noon sharp from 9th & Oak. The 15 mile rides will get you back to work at 1:00 or shortly there after. There is also a group of fast riders that meets at 5:30 pm behind Orange Peel Cycle every Tues evening.

Mtn bike riders should check with Sore Saddle Cyclery as they have both night rides and woman's rides leaving from the shop on a schedule basis.

We may, as a club, try organizing evening and/or weekend rides again on an experimental basis but we'll have to check into insurance before we can lend the RCR name to any event. In the meantime, if you or a group are putting together a ride and wouldn't mind a few more, drop me an email and I'll get the word out to the members.

Road TT Series? We have a new member who recently moved here from Bellingham, WA where he had experience putting on a weekly time trial series. He would be interested in starting a series in Steamboat if there is enough interest and if he can find a workable course. We'll be working with him getting the word out on his project and will keep everyone up to date on the progress.

Yellow Bike ProgramThe Yellow Bike Program has not reappeared this season as the driving force behind the program has left town. If you would be interested in taking over the program or at least helping out, please contact George Krawzoff. George also suggested that if we wanted to resurrect the bike lane project we need to get involved in the Steamboat Community Plan. This is the long range plan for Steamboat and if we want bikes included we need to attend meetings and get involved.

Bike FestivalSore Saddle Cyclery will again be sponsoring this year's Steamboat Bike Festival, June 28 - 30. Although the guided ride program won't be part of the festival, the races and other events will be expanded. Contact the shop at 879-1675 for more information.

9/11 NY Education RideTwo passionate cyclists, one a New York City native, are riding across the nation to raise $1 million for the Twin Towers Orphan Fund, a national charity established to benefit children orphaned by the disasters of 9/11. All donations collected will be used to provide for the long-term well being of those children, including educational assistance and mental and physical health care.

The cyclists will be passing through Steamboat Springs on June 28 and 29. Their visit will include a free bike safety seminar on June 29 as part of the Steamboat Bike Festival.

Email AddressesI have had a large number of RCR emails returned as undeliverable. Please let me know your new addresses so I can keep you up to date with club news.

Sept 2001

Lower Bear Trail UpdateThe new Lower Bear Trail is complete. The USFS and the Rocky Mtn Youth Corps created the new trail. The new section has an 800' elevation gain with numerous switchbacks but it isn't as steep as the section of the old Two Track Trail it is replaced. The reports I get say it is a great addition. Routt County Riders received grants totalling $13,000 for the project with $5,700 going to the Rock Mtn Youth Corps, $1,300 to the City of Steamboat (Urban Youth Corps), and the remaining $6,000 to the USFS. Keep buying those lottery tickets and support you local trail building!

Gore Gruel RideSore Saddle Cyclery has been trying to reserect the Gore Gruel as an annual ride but there just doesn't seem to be much interest. This year there was some confusion over the scheduled date as it was changed a couple times in an attempt to avoid a conflict with the World Mtn Bike Championships in Vail. The final date was set as Sunday, Sept 9 but there were only 3 riders signed up so the ride was canceled. If you have any interest in seeing this ride take place please let someone at Sore Saddle Cyclery know. They are willing to provide sag and support but there has to be interest from the bike community.

Biking on OLNThose of you enjoying the Vuelta a Espania (Tour of Spain) on Outdoor Life Network are probably already aware that OLN will be showing a couple of local events this month. This Thursday, Sept 20 they will broadcast the Montezuma's Revenge MTB Race and next Thursday, Sept 27 they will broadcast the RAAM Race. RAAM isn't really a local event but they did come through Steamboat this year as well as last so you might see some local landmarks. Their Thursday night bike schedule is a great fix for those that just can't get enough biking.

Email AddressesThose of you that had CMN as their ISP now have new email address with Earthlink. Please let me know your new addresses so I can send you the club news updates. I have been getting mail returned as undeliverable.

June 2001

Lower Bear Trail UpdateThe Lower Bear Trail is being worked on as we speak. The USFS has run a blade over the 1.5 mile trail creating a rough 18" path. The Rocky Mtn Youth Corps will then fine tune the path to create the new trail. The new section will have an 800' elevation gain with numerous switchbacks but it will not be as steep as the section of the old Two Track Trail it is replacing.

IMBA Trail CrewThe IMBA Traveling Trail Crew will be in Steamboat July 27-30. They will be working with the Colo State Parks, the USFS, and Routt County Riders to create a new trail connecting Pearl Lake State Park with the existing Coulton Creek Trail. The IMBA group will also hold a trail building clinic on Saturday, July 28. This will be an excellent opportunity for RCR members to learn the details of trail design, construction, and maintenance.

Hot Springs Trail UpdateThank you to those that turned out to work on the Hot Springs Trail. There wasn't a lot of work to be done but Pete Wither, Robert Ames, Matt Crawford and his son in law, Steve from the USFS, and Dave Miller found time to kick some rocks, trim some brush, and otherwise clean up our trail. As a sidelight, the USFS has finally cleared the downed trees from the single track at the top of hill between Hot Springs and Mad Creek. A big thank you to them.

Trail Condition UpdatesIt may seem early but both the Scotts Run and Coulton Creek trails are dry and in great shape. There is a new bridge over the North Fork of the Elk which bypasses a large section of blowdown timber. The Scotts Run Trail takes off about a mile beyond the bridge, on the left.

Those of you that ride in the Seedhouse Road area may have noticed a sign at the Three Island Lake trailhead prohibiting bikes beyond that point. The USFS placed the sign there without realizing that bikes utilize a short section of the trail to access what is known as Smokies Trail. Smokies is the lower section of the original Three Island Lake Trail that goes from the existing trailhead down to the bride over the Elk Middle Fork. The unofficial word from the USFS is that bikers can ignore the sign as long as they are riding Smokies Trail and not proceeding up towards the Wilderness boundary.

One of our members rode Muddy Slide Trail last week (6/3/01) and reports that only a few snowbanks remain in the trees on the downhill section (riding clockwise). These should be gone within a week.

Emerald Mtn SurveyWe encourage those of you that received a survey regarding the future of the Emerald Mtn property to return the survey as soon as possible. A large survey response will help determine how the community will support the State Land Board property.

RAAM Through StmbtThe Race Across America (RAAM) will again be riding through Steamboat this summer. The solo riders will be leaving Portland on Sunday, June 17 and the team riders (2 or 4 person teams) will be leaving the following day. Both are expected to come through Steamboat between midnight Tuesday, June 19 and early morning June 20. The checkpoint will be between the Rabbit Ears Motel and Blimpie Subs. Steamboat is 1,208 miles from the start and last year the first rider through had ridden the distance with only 2 hrs sleep! Contact Robert Ames if you have any questions or are willing to help out.

Stmbt Bike FestivalThe third annual Steamboat Bike Festival will be held June 22-24. The festival has something for everyone from road races to mtn bike rides to BMX arial displays. Sore Saddle Cyclery could use help from RCR members to make the festival a success. Check out the festival web site for a full schedule of events.

Town Challenge DiscountDon't forget that your $15 membership to Routt County Riders is worth a $10 discount on a season entry to the Steamboat Town Challenge Mtn Bike Series. You can pay for your RCR membership at the Parks & Rec office on River Road when you buy your season pass. The City of Stmbt has put together a great web page for the race series that includes the schedule, maps and elevation profiles of the race courses, and lots of other information. If you start from the City front page it will take you a while to wander through the maze of links to find it so I recommend you load the direct link as a bookmark and save yourself some frustration.

May 2001

Lower Bear Trail UpdateThe 1.5 mile long Lower Bear Trail links the Strawberry Park Hot Springs Road to the old Double Track Trail going to Elk Park. RCR has received a $13,000 grant from GOCO to construct the trail. The trail alignment has been engineered and flagged and the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps are scheduled to spend a week working on it in June. They won't be able to complete the trail so RCR will have more than one member work day to complete it. Stay tuned for more details.

Continental Divide TrailThis summer IMBA is performing a complete inventory of the Continental Divide Trail and has requested assistance from local bike clubs. Unfortunately, all the sections in our area have been spoken for and the section they would like our assistance on is in the Wyoming Great Basin area. If anyone is interested in helping IMBA inventory this section, contact Pete Wither for more information.

Emerald Mtn ToursEthan Johnson has reached agreement with the City of Steamboat to run guided mtn bike tours of Emerald Mtn this summer. He hopes to be up and running by the second week of June. The tentative charge will be $20 for a 1.5 hour tour. This should be really popular with the tourists and we hope Ethan can make a go if it.

Non-Designated TrailsSteve McCone from the USFS was at the last meeting to discuss the Lower Bear Trail. One concern he did have was the unauthorized development of what the USFS terms non-designated trails. These are trails developed by individuals without USFS approval. The concern is that these trails are usually not designed to cope with erosion or other issues and can become real problems. The trail developed for bikes soon becomes used by motorcycles then by ATV's and the USFS has a real mess on its hands.

New Town Challenge ClassificationIf anyone is interested in participating in an Over 50 class this season, please contact Bob Dapper (846-4333) and let him know. Parks & Rec has had some interest but they have to have a minimum number of riders before they will create a new age group.

Ride The RockiesThe annual Denver Post bike tour is coming through Steamboat this year. We will not be a layover day as occured last time they were here but there will still be 2,000 riders along with 1,500 family members and support crews in town. The riders will arrive from Avon on Tues, June 19 and they will leave for Granby the following morning. The Steamboat Chamber is organizing the visit and they are in need of numerous volunteers. Please contact Dina Monico at the Chamber if you can spare some time to help.

Where's MaybellThe annual Where The Hell's Maybell ride will be held Saturday morning, May 19. There are two starts - one at 7:00 am at the old 84 Lumber yard just west of Craig and the other at 7:30 at Western Knolls (for those that want to avoid the two big hills). The Maybell Ambulance crew will be serving breakfast behind the Maybell Cafe for $5. You can arrange for a return shuttle if you call the Craig Parks & Rec ahead of time.
