August 2004 ROUTT COUNTY RIDERS BICYCLE CLUB Meeting Minutes

Pete was unable to attend so Brad Cusenbary (VP) presided.

Emerald Mountain Land Swap Meeting.
Brad discussed the Emerald Mtn. Partnership management plan meeting for the proposed BLM land swap. Pete again spoke in favor of the land swap on RCR's behalf. Brad had gone to the bike shops and gotten 120+ signatures in support too.

Trail Work on Howelson Hill / Emerald Mtn.
Gretchen and Brad met with the city. Approved for RCR to the re-route of Loop 4 into Loop 5 -approximately .8-1.0 mile. The layout will be done by Gretchen and Mark Sehler along with Wes Clay and Neal from the city trails. The city will use their brush cutter to clear the path- in-kind services. Then RCR + volunteers will actually build the trail. This is RCR's test case to put together a plan and execute it. 2-3 weeks before the tread is laid - late August- September. Then the volunteers can get busy. Should we have someone head up the volunteer sign up/ recruitment? Pat West volunteered. KFMU, Stmbt. Today-Happenings plus an article would also be good promo. Brad says the newspaper already called. Timeline- once organized will e-mail the membership, get sign ups sheet out (at bike shops for sure), newspaper, radio, etc. Sore Saddle has a program for trail work done: for 4 hours of trail work done for IMBA or RCR trails, Sore Saddle will give a one-time discount. Maybe other bike shops will adopt the idea.

Tools
Tools are needed for RCR: 5 more McClouds @ approx. $65 each plus an adze(sp.?), Pulaski's, and some bow saws. Ace @ the Curve/ Steamboat True Value will donate the Pulaski's and 1 each 30" and 20" bow saw. Scott made a motion for RCR to purchase the McClouds and the adze. Brad 2nd.

Bank Account: Scott says the checking account has $1073.90 plus $465 from the new jerseys and new memberships dues.

Gore Gruel:
The last weekend in September is the Gore Gruel road/ Rock Creek mtn.ride being put on by RCR and Sore Saddle Cyclery. More details will follow after Larry and Scott talk to Marc and/or Chris Oppold at Sore Saddle. They will put together a plan and then get the word out- e-mails and sign up sheets as well as some radio and newspaper mentions. There will be the normal road ride- 112 mile loop from Steamboat over Rabbit Ears Pass and Gore Pass and back to Steamboat via Toponas, Yampa, Phippsburg, and Stagecoach. On the same day there will be an organized mtn. bike ride at Rock Creek- a great 20 mile ride. Something for everyone. Then we'll have a BBQ for everyone when we return. We encourage all members to participate and see if we can get non-members to participate also. There will be a fee- probably somewhat more for members. Stay tuned for more details. We also talked about this being a fund raiser- toward trail work funds or some other cause.

Other fundraiser ideas: do something like the Backcountry Ball, Bike Festival, a special event- Pat West suggested a ride for RCR members only on property not normally available- like on the Humble Ranch or Emerald Mtn. Funds raised could go to the Humble Ranch and toward our trail work. The end-of-the-season Town Challenge race party.

The jerseys are a fund raiser too thru the advertising dollars from local businesses and organizations. Jerseys are $45 for members and $60 for non-members (includes membership if fill sign up). As more jerseys are needed they will be ordered. Thank you Larry Johnson for sticking with this project and seeing it thru!! The jerseys look great. Get one!!!!

Annual RCR Awards:
The subject of the annual recognition awards begun at last year's year-end Town Challenge party was discussed. Awards were given to one person each for volunteer, rider, and trad. Please submit nominations to Larry Johnson at larry@gjerager.com. Additional nominations can be made at the next RCR meeting, Thursday, Sept. 2nd. Then as with last year we will hand ballots at the RCR meeting and at the Town Challenge party. Beth will do membership signups and sell RCR jerseys at the Buffalo Pass Hill Climb on Wed., August 18th. Gretchen and Brad will bring Power Bars as freebies to the race too.

Chip 'n' Seal:
New member George brought up the chip and seal debate. Beth works at the County and says that the Routt County Commissioners and Paul Draper, the county road boss are looking for input. So let's all give it to them. And CDOT too. Could someone contact the Bicycle Colorado Advocacy group to seek ideas? Anyone interested in leading this Cause? Or any other cause?

Here is a note from Nancy Stahoviak to Beth Ritter:
"Thank you for your e-mail regarging the County roads. Currently, our Road & Bridge Dept., Finance Dept. & County Manager are in the process of developing the 2005 Road & Bridge Budget. The Commissioners have not set a specific work session date to discuss the budget, but it will probably occur in late Sept. or Oct. We would appreciate you sending a letter to the Commissioners at P.O.Box 773598, Steamboat Springs, Co. 80477, with a copy to the Road & Bridge Director, Paul Draper (same address). In your letter please outline your concerns. We have already had some discussion with the Road & Bridge Dept. regarding the challenges faced by bicyclists on freshly chip-sealed roads, and we will be evaluating alternative solutions. Your input would be very helpful.
Thank You,
Nancy Stahoviak"

Another reply from Doug Monger:
"Beth, I have cc'd your message to Paul Draper, the R&B director. He and we will let you know when that will be happening. The Commissioners have been in contact with Paul regarding the concerns of the bike riders. He is currently working on more information for us regarding the benefits of the surfacing methods that we are using and the subsequent hassles experienced by the bikers. Hopefully, we will have some more quantitative information to be using for our decisions regarding surface materials and the costs and benefits of such. During our work session yesterday we also asked Paul to experiment with the concept of using the roller on the shoulders as I believe you had discussed with Commissioner Stahoviak. We will be waiting to see if that helps the situation. Thanks Doug Monger"

So please let's all give the County Commissioners and Paul Draper our input. You can also e-mail the county officials at: nancystahoviak@co.routt.co.us ( and the same for doug monger, dan ellison, and paul draper).

Hot Springs: Thanks to all of our membership that worked on the Hot Springs a couple of weeks ago. Great job! I just rode the trail for the first time since your work on Sunday. What a difference. And boy has everything really grown this year, or what?

Next RCR meeting is Thursday, September 2nd @ 6:00 p.m. at Panda Garden. Mountain bikers and Road riders ATTEND too and GET INVOLVED!!!! Please come and give your input and vote for the Recognition Awards. And don't forget the last 2 Town Challenge races- Buffalo Pass Hill Climb-Wed., Aug.18th and the Mt. Werner criterium on Friday, Sept.10th. (both earlier starts by 1/2 hour). Don't forget the Gore Gruel/Rock Creek ride. And stay tuned for the details on the trail work upcoming on Emerald Mtn. Ta Ta for now.

(Thanks again to Scott for writing the minutes)
