Trail work: thanks to all those that turned out to clear the Hot Springs Trail last week.

July 8, 2004 ROUTT COUNTY RIDERS BICYCLE CLUB Meeting Minutes

-24 Hours of Steamboat- Brad gave us all a summary of the very successful 1st Annual 24 Hours of Steamboat Mtn. Bike Race. It was a great success- 217 racers! Lots of spectators- locals and visitors. Enjoyed by all racers- we speak from experience. Thanks to all of the volunteers and congratulations to Brad, Katie, and Gretchen of Rocky Peak Productions. Good cooperation and involvement from Ski Corp.- exceeded all expectations. Brad met with Chris Diamond after the race and discussed further trail development- a cooperative effort between Ski Corp., Routt Nat?l Forest, Rocky Peak Productions, and Routt County Riders.

-Town Challenge - Gretchen says participation has been strong this year- 35 kids at Wednesday?s race out of 196 competitors. The previous three races- 197, 199, and 173. Wow! People seem to be excited about the new trails on Emerald Mtn.- MGM and Lupine Loop. The Community Youth Corps funded by a GOCO $10,000 grant and a SS City match of $6,000 built 4,500 feet and closed approximately 2,000 feet of ?non-sustainable, straight-down-the-hill? trails- along with Gretchen and Marc. RCR wrote a letter of support to GOCO for this effort.

-Trails- Marc made a cool sign for Lupine Loop and hopes to make signs for the top and bottom of each loop eventually on all City property. Gretchen will also talk to Gardner Orton about some signs on trails on their property too. Discussed the City?s Master trail plan and mapping. But no mapping of the Orton property except for emergency purposes- Routt County Search and Rescue. The Ortons want to keep it as a ?locals? use area , not to become a destination area for visitors and increased usage. Most of the trails are multi-use too (hiking, horseback riding, biking, xc skiing, etc.) The primary goal is to replace old ?non-sustainable? trails with ones that are sustainable.

-Tools- Gretchen asked RCR to buy some trail tools- 5 McClouds, 1 Pulaski, and 1 bow saw. Plus maybe a 12? (or so) gas chainsaw and a gas weed/bush wacker. Gretchen will talk to or e-mail Pete. Scott will check what?s available through True Value. (Note: available thru True Value are the Pulaski, the bow saw, and the chain saw and weed/bush wacker.)

-Trail Work- Discussed how the Hot Springs Trail has grown in a lot since our early-season trail work day. Pete will talk to Steve from the Forest Service. Tentatively set for next Thursday, July 15th evening at 5:30. We need 10+ people for sure. And we need people to commit and sign up in advance. Contact Robin Craigen @ 870-9359 or e-mail him at info@movingmountains.com. Anticipated time is 2 ½ to 3 hours.

-Other trail work discussion. No trail days planned yet. But Gretchen and Marc are planning to continue MGM down into and thru Heart Meadow. Once it?s flagged they?ll get the word out to RCR seeking help to complete the trail. Gretchen and Brad will meet with Mike Newman (and/or Chris Wilson) to discuss Loop 4 and the Master Plan. Would really like to make this a RCR project.

-Adopt-a-Highway- Dave Dunlop got info online on this program- ?Spruce Up Colorado- Adopt-a-Highway Program.? Decided that it?s a good idea, but we don?t feel our organization has strong enough participation yet. We tabled for now. Look at in the future. More info available at www.dot.state.co.us/AdoptAHighway/policies.cfm. However, RCR does need to involve its membership in road cycling advocacy and issues more- CDOT and County budget and road meetings and work toward changes in chip-and-seal policy in the future.

-Forest Service Letter- Pete presented a letter received from the Forest Service seeking input on re-routing 35 miles of the Continental Divide Trail in the Never-Summer Range area. Would re-route off current road to trails to create for non-motorized , multi-use only. Pete will write a letter of support from RCR. Website: www.fs.fed.us/r2/mbr for more info.

-RCR Jerseys- Larry says the jerseys are supposed to ship (from Italy) on July 15th. If you signed up for one (and haven?t paid) or want one, please pay now? Check for $45 (members) or $60 (non-members- jersey + $15 membership) to P.O.Box 770094, SS, Co. 80477 or go to our website: routtcountyriders.org and pay with your credit card. Order form is on the website. Order and Pay Now. Assuming they come in by the end of July, Larry will have at the August RCR meeting, Town Challenge race, plus pre-arranged time at his work.

-Gore Gruel- Larry talked to Chris Oppold at Sore Saddle Cyclery re: Gore Gruel Road Ride. We are planning a joint effort w/RCR. Scheduled for the last weekend of September. Will do a mountain bike ride on the same day- Rock Creek probably- and have a feed station at Gore Pass Road/Lynx Pass Road intersection and then a BBQ/party back in Steamboat afterwards. We?ll encourage both members and non-members to participate. One price for members and one for non-members (=probably member price + $15 membership). Should have final info at August RCR meeting.

-Trail next Year- Robin suggested RCR should maybe find a trails project next year. Work with the city and get committee heads to plan during the off-seasons. Gretchen and Marc put in 9 hours flagging the new Lupine Loop.

-It?s been a great year for RCR!!
-New trails on Emerald Mtn.
-Fantastic 1st Annual Bike Swap
-24 Hours of Steamboat- Very successfully put on by Rocky Peak Prods. Principles who are RCR members + great volunteer involvement and local race participation.
-Huge increase in RCR membership.
-New RCR banner unveiled at last Town Challenge

Next RCR meeting is Thursday, August 6th @ 6:00 p.m. at Panda Garden. Mountain bikers and Road riders ATTEND too and GET INVOLVED!!!!

(Thanks to Scott for writing the minutes)
