YEAH! RIO 24 HOURS OF STEAMBOAT
The event was a great success - congratulations Gretchen, Brad and Katie and many thanks to all the volunteers, sponsors and riders that made it happen.
IMPORTANT TRAIL NOTICE
The County (not City!) is closing the Spring Creek road/trail (County Road 34) from 7am to 5pm M-F for the next two weeks? The private land owner above the ponds and below the road switchbacks, about a one mile stretch, is doing fire fuel reduction and beetle kill tree removal work. THEY WILL BE DROPPING TREES ACROSS THE ROAD/TRAIL as part of this work. It could be extremely dangerous to ignore the closure....
BICYCLE TOUR OF COLORADO COMES TO STEAMBOAT (June 29 / 30)- HELP NEEDED
The organizers are looking for Volunteers for this years tour. If you can help visit their Web site at www.bicycletourcolorado.com and drop them an email. From Granby to Steamboat and Steamboat to Walden, they have a couple spots that need Marshals
Moots cycles are hosting an optional ride to the Clark General Store. Contact Dan Hagney at 970-879-1676, ext. 102. They are having an open house on that day and can probably use some help. Also, on Tuesday the 29th and Wednesday the 30th they will be having a small sports expo on Mt. Werner with Hazel Miller playing on the mountain on the 29th
ROUTT COUNTY RIDERS BICYCLE CLUB MEETING- Monday, June 7,2004
Welcome to new member Jeannie!
24 Hours of Steamboat:
We discussed the 24 Hours of Steamboat bike race which takes place this weekend June12-13. Congratulations to Brad, Katie, and Gretchen on such a great sign-up for the very first year (of many to come). Brad says approximately 170 riders are currently registered with more coming in daily- 60% +out-of-town and 40% local. Thanks also to all of the volunteers. If you are not racing this weekend and are available to volunteer, please stop in at Sore Saddle and sign up. Thank you to Chris and the gang at Sore Saddle for heading this volunteer sign up. There was a great turn out last Saturday to do trail work on the 24 Hours course. Great job! (sorry I was late getting this news out..)
Adopt-a-Trail:
The proposed Adopt-a-Trail program has been well received by Mike Newman, the Parks & Recreation Open Space Coordinator. The idea is to have organizations and businesses adopt a trail through either trail work and/or financial support. Also, in conjunction, the city is working on a master plan of trails on Howelson Hill/ Emerald Mtn. We discussed at great length how to get RCR involved both with volunteers and financially to assist in the building of new trails, maintenance of existing ones, and the closure of non-sustainable trails. The city along with RCR and other input need to coordinate and prioritize these efforts. We would like to help the city and Gretchen and Marc Sehler, who put in countless hours of trail work. Brad said he would have lots more info at our next meeting. And Pete said he would call Mike Newman too.
RCR Trail Project
Everyone present was in favor of getting a small project or two this with RCR involvement. We also feel that we would like to plan and execute at least one major trail project each year. One idea was also to do fund raiser (s) and ask the city to match for trail projects. Also, trails need to be raised as a budget issue with the city.
Adopt-A-Highway
Dave Dunlop asked about adopting a road. The idea is to adopt a section of a paved state or county road and do the clean up for that stretch. Dave said he would check into this and get back to the membership at the July meeting.
RCR Jerseys
Larry Johnson gave us an update on the RCR club jersies. He sent the order in along with $2100 to Red Rose. Meghan Morgan will forward the graphics to them also ASAP. RCR members can buy these jersies for only $45. Contact Larry Johnson (phone 879-1927h/879-5868w; e-mail= larry@gjerager.com). Either mail Larry a check to PO Box 774644 or you can bill to your credit card. Go to the RCR website for an order form. Robin will have an order form available on-line soon. Join the club and the jersey is only $45. If you aren?t currently a member, then you get the jersey and membership for $60. The jersies should be here in approx. 6 weeks.
Steamboat Road Crits:
The road criteriums out at Copper Ridge Business Park will begin on Wednesday, June 16th. Meet at Steve Green Company at 7:00 pm. These will be held every other Wednesday between Town Challenge races and go around and through this business park. If you haven?t done these rides before, come and try it out. You will have a ball going all out for 20 minutes or so. Questions- call Jim Barker at the Steve Green Co.
Ride the Rockies and Bicycle Tour of Colorado(BTC) (see top of this message) are both coming thru Steamboat later in June. Both also have layover days here, and the suggested ride for those who still wish to ride on that day is the Oak Creek/ Power Plant loop. Brad is going to contact Jody at the Chamber to see if any help is needed locally and if ride leaders are needed. Would be good for RCR to be involved. Scott also will contact BTC to ask too.
2005 Tour de Steamboat:
Brad said to put August 12-14, 2005 on the calendar for the Tour de Steamboat- a road stage race with a century ride and put on in conjunction with Rocky Peak Productions and the Chamber.
Membership Update and Website:
Our paid membership is now close to 90! All right. And we have just begun. Robin would like to update our web site. Needs $200-$300 to have SpringSips work on it. Brad made a motion, 2nd by Larry to provide up to $300 for this important item. Thanks Robin!! Unanimously approved.
Gore Gruel 2004:
The fall ride Gore Gruel was talked about. Last summer RCR decided to organize or help to do so and provide support to make this a successful event for the RCR members. Last fall we discussed having both road and mountain bike rides that day and following them with a RCR members BBQ/ party. Scott will talk to Chris Oppold at Sore Saddlery, as Brad said he thought Chris was working on it with Chamber involvement. What?s the date? Would they like RCR involvement? Sponsorship.
Also, Tom Davis is planning a town crit on Sunday September 12th - the weekend of the ?state road? race on Gore Pass (September 11th). More info soon.
Next Meeting:
Our next meeting will be on a special day because of the Fourth of July holiday weekend. The July meeting will be on Thursday, July 8 at 6:00pm at the Panda Garden (unless otherwise notified). Watch the Happenings in the Stmbt. Today.
