ROUTT COUNTY RIDERS BICYCLE CLUB Monthly Meeting - Thursday, September 02, 2004

CHIP and SEAL in ROUTT COUNTY

Hopefully, lots of you were at Lyman Orton?s house for the ?Stop the Brutal Chip ?n Seal? discussion and brainstorming session. Thanks, Lyman, for holding this gathering and for spearheading this movement. We encourage all of you to either call the County Commissioners and Paul Draper, Routt County Road and Bridge Director or e-mail them with your thoughts and comments on the horrible chip and seal used in Routt County. Scott did and received responses from Doug and Dan that they would look at this issue during the budget process. Doug also said he is aware that it isn?t just a bicyclist problem but also for motorists.

MaHa Day Trail Ride
Larry Johnson is looking for riders interested in going with him and Pete Wither to ride the MaHa Dey (sp.?) trail in North Dakota. Would leave Monday, Sept.27, ride for 4 days plus travel (about a day each way). If anyone is interested, please call Larry at work 879-5868 or home 879-1927. Sounds like an interesting ride.

Club Meeting Minutes and Email List
We discussed whether to send our monthly meeting minutes and other RCR info to just members or to other past members in our data base. We decided to send to all to keep people involved. However, those of you who used to be paid members, please get involved. Volunteer. Show up at the meetings. Pay your $15 annual dues. That?s not much money per person to belong to your local bicycle advocacy group.

Trail Work Day- September
Stay tuned regarding a September trail work day. There are some things going on Howelson/ Emerald Mtn. Gretchen and Marc have been hard at it. RCR purchased 6 new McClouds (?the trail work tool?). Also, Ace at the Curve donated 2 Pulaskis and 2 bow saws. All these tools are for RCR trail work projects ( plus some older tools we already have). We will have more info soon and will get it out via e-mail and info at the bike shops and in the media.

Junior Mountain Bike Cycling Team
Last year at this time RCR named a group of young cyclists the RCR Jr. Mtn. Bike Cycling team. Then RCR invited this group to attend the 24 Hrs. of Moab bike race to observe other RCR members participate in. This year RCR will once again name a junior team- 4 boys/ 2 girls 13-15 years old (?)-to be announced at the year-end Town Challenge Bike race party. We discussed the possibility of sponsoring this group to go to Colorado Springs on Saturday Oct. 30th to participate in the Colorado High School State Championship MTB Race-individual and team competition. This competition will take place at Black Forest Camp & Conference Center 2 miles east of Monument, Co. Could pay for their entry fees and some expenses (lodging?). Would want them to wear the RCR club jerseys as their sponsor. Larry will talk to Tom Davis at the Winter Sports Club to see if there would be a conflict or if we could work together on this. Will report back at the October meeting.

Routt County Riders Bicycle Club Annual Awards
Winners of this year?s awards are (just announced last night):
-Industry: Recognizing those employed in cycling related business
Kent Erickson- founder of Moots and Sore Saddle Cyclery, Hall of Fame designer
- Rider: These riders have had success outside Steamboat this season:

Pete Wither- President of Routt County Riders Bicycle Club for many years

The award plaques will be displayed for the next year at Ski Haus after being at Sore Saddle for the past year.

Update on RCR jerseys. All bike shops have them now. Ski Haus has them prominently displayed. Thanks Vicky etal!! Not sure how many have sold at the bike shops yet. Larry says we have gone through XL?s and some other sizes quickly. These jerseys run on the small side. We decided to order another 30+ to have a full selection and to make sure the club and the bike shops have enough for the fall and upcoming Holiday gift buying season. Larry will contact the company and will remind them about the ¾ zippers that were promised.

Election of Officers
At the next meeting in October we will hold the Election of Officers- Thursday, October 7th at 6:00 p.m. at the Panda Garden. Please show up and nominate (by email if you can't make it) and vote. Anyone interested in serving and getting involved?
